Hide Messenger Message Previews

Reduce exposed message text on lock screens and notification surfaces without claiming that notifications are encryption.

Direct answer

Locking Messenger does not automatically guarantee that every notification hides its content. Review notification preview settings at the operating-system level and inside Messenger. Test the result with the screen locked.

Run a lock-screen exposure test

  1. Lock the phone and have a trusted contact send a harmless test message.
  2. Check whether the sender, text, reaction, or attachment preview is visible.
  3. Change preview settings to show content only when unlocked, or disable sensitive previews.
  4. Repeat the test for banners, the notification center, a paired watch, and connected car displays.

Privacy without missed alerts

Name only

Useful when you want to know who contacted you without showing message text.

Generic alert

Shows that Messenger has activity while withholding both sender and content.

No lock-screen alert

Best for a highly shared display, but it can delay awareness of important messages.

Remember connected surfaces

Notification privacy can differ on a watch, tablet, desktop browser, car display, or another signed-in device. Treat those surfaces as separate checks rather than assuming the phone setting covers them all.
